Shapiro is best known as the original screenwriter of the Mel Brooks film Robin Hood: Men in Tights which he wrote after university. He was the original writer of 'Battlefield Earth' which won a Razzie for the worst film of the decade; the ceremony of which jD attended to accept the award with grace and humour, famously terming it 'the suckiest movie ever'.

jD has sold dozens of scripts to almost every major studio. He's made deals as creator, writer and Executive Producer for several TV series. He has rewritten, punched up and been the creative consultant on many movies, many that went on to be blockbuster hits and/or win prestigious awards, two getting Oscar nominations.

From 2002 to 2016 he was the creative partner of comic book legend Stan Lee.

He wrote, directed & starred in 'We Married Margo' which won the Audience Award for Best Film at The HBO Comedy Festival. At the festival he met Robin Williams who was one of the people who talked jD into performing stand up.

Besides performing in many clubs and cities throughout The USA, jD performs at The World Famous Comedy Store in Los Angeles (and San Diego) and at Standup NY. He had the honor of Mitzi Shore making him a "Paid Regular" at The Comedy Store. He has given lectures & seminars on writing, directing and acting at universities & events throughout the United States and Europe.

He has been on TV & radio shows including: E!, Showtime, Comedy Central, IFC Bravo, MTV, PBS, The Mike & Juliet Show, Entertainment Tonight, CNN, Bizz Buzz, Movie Talk, MTV, The Bob & Tom Show and The Joey Reynolds Show on WOR.

In August 2022 he had his world premier and performed a full run of his one man show I'M with STUPID: Tales from Hollywood. A mix of stories and stand up based around his life and career.
